I help clients gain clarity about what they want to do to live a better life.
“Neurosis is the avoidance of legitimate suffering.”
— Carl Jung
I believe that when an individual engages in therapy, they will become more aware of what is important in their life and how to pursue it. That increased awareness leads to more satisfying, fulfilling relationships — with ourselves and with other people.

Areas of Deep Specialization
As a prior philosophy professor and now a therapist, I have always sought to consider the whole person.
In addition to being a clinical social worker, I have a PhD in philosophy — with this additional training, I am better able to help clients gain clarity about what they want in their lives.
I have always had a strong interest in working with individuals who care about the deeper questions in life: those who are searching for meaning, for greater clarity about who they are and what they want. I also appreciate those who are seeking to live a more spiritual existence.
In my experience, many of those I work with are held back not only by anxiety and fear, but by a lack of confidence and their right as a person to pursue a more joyful, fuller way of living. When I work with clients, I help them gain the courage to look at their underlying assumptions. I demonstrate methods that, through practice, make it more likely they will discover what is just over the horizon of an ongoing pursuit.
I work with those struggling with addictions, (including sex and “romance” addiction), relationship difficulties, and individuals who grew up in homes where a caregiver was emotionally unavailable or addicted. I also counsel gay individuals and couples.
Where I can help you.
I have several areas of specialization, developed from decades of experience. Click through to learn more about my approach.
Substance & Alcohol Abuse
14 years of experience. Both 12-Step and CBT frameworks. I focus on helping clients get clear about what they are avoiding by engaging in a particular addictive behavior and then helping them gain courage to work through the triggers.
Relationship & Marriage Struggles
Most relationship problems are, at their root, problems of communication — of being emotionally honest with self and our partner and intellectually clear with each other.
Sex, Pornography & Romantic Obsession
Compulsive sexual behavior and romantic obsession can quietly undermine every other area of a person’s life. Compassionate, non-judgmental support.
Gay Issues: Individual & Couples
A safe, affirming space for gay men navigating identity, relationships, family dynamics, and the particular pressures gay men often confront.
Codependency & Adult Children of Alcoholics
Many of those who grew up in dysfunctional homes feel as adults that they have an obligation to take care of others. My approach helps clients gain clarity about the emotions driving them to act as habitual caretakers and people-pleasers. I run a bi-weekly group for individuals who identify with ACOA traits.
Existential Issues & Finding Meaning
My PhD in Philosophy gives me the ability to help others get more clarity about what is important to them by asking the right questions.
Therapy as honest, courageous self-inquiry
I have a practical definition of spirituality: relationship to my true self, to other important people in my life, and — for those who believe — to God. This sits at the heart of how I work with clients.
My prior college teaching experience enables me to help clients reframe thoughts, beliefs, and feelings that have been “held over” from negative past experiences — patterns that made sense once but have long since stopped serving them.
If you are struggling with an addiction or compulsive behavior: whether the right approach is a 12-Step framework, a rational-emotive model, or something rooted in existential philosophy is something I help you consider.
“For one human being to love another: that is perhaps the most difficult of our tasks; the ultimate, the last test and proof, the work for which all other work is but preparation.”
— Rainer Maria Rilke
